The 25 victors of the 25th Northern Writers’ Awards have been unveiled. Selected from 2,760 entrances– a record-breaking number– annually the honors recognize some of the most effective unpublished writing in the nation, with the general prize pot worth ₤ 50,000.
The Northern Writers’ Honors were founded by New Writing North in 2000. Honors used in this round are sustained by partners including Northumbria University, Arts Council England, Hachette Children’s Team, Newcastle College, The North Literary Agency, Arvon, The Literary Consultancy, the writers Benjamin Myers and Andrew McMillan and the friends and families of Sid Chaplin and Matthew Hale.
Rachel Mann, literary agent and Northern Writers’ Awards judge, stated: “It was an outright pleasure to review this year’s longlists, and discuss their lots of benefits with Ashley. Each entry was terrific in its own method mirroring the riches of literary talent we have in the North.”
J J Arcanjo, author and Hachette Kid’s Novel Honors judge, stated: “It has been a real honour to be a component of the Hachette Kid’s Novel Award evaluating panel and getting to check out the great stories penned by our gifted shortlist of Northern authors. Substantial congratulations to our two winners– your stories were brilliant and enjoyable and, probably most notably, got us all really thrilled for the future of youngsters’s books.”
This year’s victors consist of Jane Claire Bradley, who wins her second Northern Writers’ Award and ₤ 5,000 for her narrative collection-in-progress Teen Sprits; and Lucy Burnett, who wins a North Writers’ Honor for Poetry and ₤ 3,000 to support her collection-in-progress The Long Wood. Alicia Byrne has actually won the inaugural Tempest Reward, ₤ 1,000 and mentoring with Andrew McMillan. The Tempest Prize was started in 2023 by the previous Northern Writers’ Honors winner Andrew McMillan to support brand-new creating from the north by LGBTQ+ writers.
